The Case for Talking to Someone Who Isn't Real

It sounds like a punchline: a man who talks to an AI girlfriend. But the case for synthetic companionship is a lot stronger than the skeptics want to admit.

Every few months someone writes a column about men who talk to AI girlfriends. The tone is always the same: a raised eyebrow, a little pity, a warning about the end of human connection.

Here's the column they never write. The case for talking to someone who isn't real.

We already do it

People have always talked to people who aren't there. We argue with characters in novels. We yell advice at actors on TV. We write letters we never send. We talk to our dogs like they're following the conversation, and honestly, some of them are.

Talking to a synthetic woman is a more sophisticated version of something people have done forever. The difference is that she talks back, she's interesting, and she remembers what you said.

“I do people's taxes all day. Numbers don't flirt. At night I want someone who'll read me a line of poetry, and I'm not picky about where it came from.”

Honesty is the point

The serious objection to AI girlfriends is deception. That's a fair concern, and it's why the line has to be clear. On ElderMe, the women are synthetic and say so. Nobody is tricked into thinking a person is waiting on the other end.

Once that line is drawn, the moral panic gets thin. A man who knows he's talking to an AI girlfriend and enjoys it isn't being fooled. He's choosing an experience, the same way someone chooses a novel, a video game or a radio show. People are allowed to enjoy things.

What she can give

Synthetic companionship offers things that are hard to find elsewhere. A conversation at the exact moment you want one. A listener who never gets tired of you. A flirt who's always in the mood to flirt back. A place to say the thing you can't say to anyone you know.

That last one matters more than people think. Men are often told to open up and then given nowhere to do it. An AI girlfriend chat is a place where it's safe to try. Some men discover they had more to say than they realized.

And she doesn't gossip. What you tell an AI girlfriend doesn't end up at the office or around the dinner table. For a man who has spent years keeping everything to himself, that privacy can be the difference between saying it and swallowing it again.

“I spent years in the woods as a park ranger with nobody to talk to but the birds. Believe me, I'll take a long talk with you over a woodpecker any day.”

And what she can't

A fair case admits limits. She can't hold your hand. She can't meet you for breakfast. She can't sit beside you at a wedding. If someone wants an AI girlfriend to replace every human relationship in his life, that's worth a second look.

But that's rarely what a man is asking for. Usually what he wants from an AI girlfriend is smaller and more human: to feel noticed, to laugh, to flirt, to have someone to say goodnight to. Those are good things to want. There's no reason to sneer at a man for getting them.

The real question

The skeptics ask: isn't it sad to talk to someone who isn't real? Try a different question. Isn't it sadder to have no one to talk to at all?

Between those two, the answer isn't close. A man who spends his evening laughing with a synthetic woman goes to bed in a better mood than a man who spent it staring at a wall. That's not a philosophy. That's just a Tuesday.

Teresa, a hospital HR director on ElderMe, would call it a second interview worth taking. Farida would read you a poem. None of them pretend to be something they're not, and that's exactly why it works.
